What you'll learn

This interactive training introduces British Sign Language interpreters to the knowledge required to support clients during appointments in optical practice. From understanding the anatomy of the eye, common conditions and routine assessments, interpreters will gain practical insights into terminology, processes, and communication strategies used in optometry setting. The goal is to ensure accurate, culturally appropriate interpretation that enhances patient-centred care. As a result you can feel more confident and better-equipped to interpret in this domain.
Through scenarios and practical examples, participants will learn how to anticipate specialist vocabulary and gain tools to help manage complex explanations. This session also addresses common challenges interpreters face in eye care settings, helping them feel prepared and professional in every appointment.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Understand the basic anatomy of the eye and its key functions to more accurately interpret relevant medical terminology during appointments.
  2. Become familiar with common eye conditions and their symptoms (e.g., cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye) to provide clear and contextually accurate interpretation.
  3. Outline the steps involved in routine eye assessments (such as visual acuity tests, pressure checks, and retinal imaging) to anticipate terminology and support effective communication between patient and practitioner.
