What you'll learn

How much power do interpreting agencies have in driving market standards? Are steps such as agency accreditation necessary to standardise agency practices and ensure professionally sustainable interpreting services provision? How can we work with agencies to foster effective service delivery?

This presentation explores these important questions by delving into the pivotal role that agencies play in professionalisation of the interpreting field. Relevant guidelines and standards for the provision of interpreting services are presented and these frameworks are then compared to the existing research on agency practices and applied to recent changes in interpreting services provision via agencies.

This presentation also reports on new research into interpreter perceptions on the power of agencies to influence market disorder in the interpreting industry and opinions on the need for a Code of Industry Practice for agencies and agency accreditation. Practical applications are suggested such as leveraging both existing and developing guidelines for service provision and approaches for engaging in collective action to facilitate effective service delivery.

Brett will be expanding upon her recent presentation from the 2016 ASLI conference.
